A final piece of the puzzle falls together inside my mind when I hear Sahar Z’s myriad talent. His Dj sets and productions have simply distinguished himself from any pack. I believe, that music first and foremost should inform, educate and then simultaneously entertain….and Sahar is all that and more rolled in to one sparkling performer.
Plus there is no question about his royal presence in Israel’s vibrant night life scene, and is spoken off with much excitement and love. Sahar has always been in the fore front of club doings in Tel Aviv, except now his uncompromising talent and musical repertoire is pushing itself to the rest of the world with great speed and fanfare.
And I’d like very much to take the onus up of introducing the electric focus of Sahar Z to our Indian shores, cause he’s with it…

Sahar 🙂 Tell us how you’re journey began in the initial days of you starting as an up and coming Dj?-

SZ- From when I was 8, I remember coming back home from school every day straight to our living room where my Dad’s Turntable and vinyls collection were kept, I used to pick the same one every day that was ”Cerrone – “Supernature” and without fail hypnotized from the first analog synth arpeggiator I’d ever heard. Since then my desire for music, new sounds and new beats just grew from day to day. I used to go to school with my big double Tape Cassette, waiting for the breaks between classes to play music to my friends who were my very first audience.
When was it you realized that being a DJ/Producer is what you were meant to be?-

SZ- When I saw and heard the way people reacted to my sets and music.
Who were the early influences, the artists that you were growing up listening to that may have made an impact on you’re young mind?-

SZ- Cerrone – Pink Floyd – The Doors – Led Zepplin – Giorgio Moroder – Kraftwerk – Art of Noise – Run D.M.C – Depeche Mode – New order – Steve Wonder – Joy division – Duran Duran.
Israel has made a deep undoubtedly huge impact on the dance music scene, predominantly because of it’s Psychedelic Trance heavy artists, making their way around the world. Having come from such a background, how did you get in to the Progressive/Techno circuit. Is there a fair following for the latter sub-genre, what made you choose this sound?-

SZ- In my opinion to divide music in to genres is not really a productive thing, for me there is only music that I like and music that I don’t like.
Tell us mainly what got you going in to producing music, and is a large amount of you’re time spent tinkering in the studio. What piece of music equipment is your prized possession and do you play any musical instruments?-

SZ- A big desire to translate the way I think about music into something real that I can play and share with others. I played the Piano from age 8 till 15, my favorite equipments in my studio are: Elektron Analog Four & Virus Kb that I use for sounds like arpeggiators ,pads, chords,bass lines and fx, for drums programming I like to use the Maschine by native instruments.

Can you share with us your experiences of the residency at one of the top clubs in Israel, ”Haoman 17”, what’s the current status with it?-

SZ- The Resident DJ degree is a crucial significance in club culture. He or she is unlike artists hosted occasionally, DJing regularly at the same club develops a deep and intimate relationship with the audience. It is a powerful contact to making the degrees of a club experience to a higher level of spirituality. I did it for 12 years and in 2007 the crowd started to change in the club and I’d started to feel like a stranger in my “home” which made me decide to leave, to look and create a new one which is the Cat&Dog.

 

What’s your take on having won the Dj of the Year award, 3 consecutive times as hosted by one of Israel’s premier dance music magazines. Has life changed for you with these accolades?-

SZ- Personally I’ve stayed the same like I was before the win. The only things that changed is the fact that I have become the most popular Dj in Israel. I’ve started to tour the country from South to North playing every weekend. Sometimes in several clubs in the same night. For me it has been a challenging time. I was away from my “home”, from my regular audience that knew me and my music perfect. I needed to play to a new crowd that has never heard my style of music, but they’ve heard my name from the newspapers or from friends that came to parties at Haoman 17.
What made you open one of the most prolific dance clubs to come out of Tel Aviv- ”The Cat & Dog”. Could you share the ideas and vision you had to be part of this as a Dj and club owner. Do you take part in day to day activities, aside from featuring in you’re residency?-

SZ- In Tel Aviv at that time there were only bars playing a mix of all kinds of music and some mega clubs that is too mainstream and relevant to the young crowd.The good old and the new generation of the underground electronic people and music lovers were missing a place to hangout in that will fill their passions and needs. The cat&dog club was opened to fill this empty square in the club scene. In the day time I’m taking part with what is related to the music policy in the club – line ups – Djs and of course my residency.

Sahar, you are collaborating with some of the most respected record labels such as Bedrock, Lost & Found, Renaissance to name some. Happy to be part of such giants… do you suit your sounds with the requirements of the labels, or if you can fill us in with what exactly the process is behind these partnerships?-

SZ- In the studio I focus only in music – I’m not trying to suit it to labels requirements. What comes out in the end stands for itself. The process after is to contact a label you like and respect, that is releasing music in the similar sound and vibe. After the first/second release it’s normal to start a partnership/ relationship with the label if you both are happy with the result.
Do you enjoy remixing work of fellow Djs, as much as making you’re own tunes?-

SZ- I like them both but prefer originals. In remixing other Dj’s music I do enjoy translating their music and vibe in my way and to give the listeners another way to experience that track. As far as my own tunes go, it’s more personal. You don’t need to use other producers parts like in remixing, here everything is born in the studio influenced by your own feelings at that time and not limited by any genre or style.

The name of Sahar Z is synonymous with the other demi gods of dance music namely Lost & Found label owner, Dj/Producer extraordinaire Guy J and of course the Progressive behemoth Guy Mantzur. Can you tell us of how you guys met, got together and decided to collaborate in music. Could you give us a peek in to the specialty of the relationship you 3 share?-

SZ- I met Guy J and Guy Mantzur years ago, each one in a different situation and a different period of time. In both cases we started to hang out and share our vision of music, a subject that immediately led us to play back to back in some clubs and to the studio to make music together. After I met Guy Mantzur, I introduced him to Guy J and from that day we’re like a family and Lost&Found is the home base. What makes this relationship we three share special is that there is no ego here, it’s a friendship that grows beyond music, just pure respect and love.
To a layman this side of the world, how would you describe the sort of music you play currently?-

SZ- It’s music for your head and not only for your legs, what I’m trying to do with my music is to transport the crowd through a journey of atmospheres and moods ranging from hypnotic beats to deeply vintage synthesizers, with melodic sounds and fresh electronica to the harder yet soulful Techno edges.
Let’s talk about an important question that comes to many a mind. That of quality music…I personally don’t feel there’s much of great productions out there nowadays. Do you think dance music in general has become sort of stagnant? Boring? Monotonous?-

SZ- Yes I agree with you that the current electronic music market is flooded with lesser quality music than in the past. Today the ability to create music is accessibility for everyone because of the new technology rise. In this digital age to open a records label doesn’t require mortgage any more, you can release tracks with costs that are minimal. Take these two things, put them together and there’s the reason for that amount of non-quality music flooding the market. But there are still super amazing producers out there old and new ones… one just needs to really dig deep beneath to find the quality ones..
I’d like to know you’re thoughts on the annual Top 100 Dj poll?-

SZ- It was never relevant to me and I’m sure that in the last few years more and more colleagues and underground music lovers feel like me.
To hit the high notes of you’re production sensibilities; what are the elements or sound scape that you like to present in your music work. And if I were to ask you, to choose one tune that you are especially proud of having created, which one would that be…?-

SZ- I like to create a groove that will hypnotize you, it will be deep and warm but still a bit junkie and twisted, on the top one will always hear a deep atmospheric melody that gives my raw sound a human face, to make it less cold. If I had to choose one it has to be the remix I did with Guy Manztur for one of my tracks that came out on Renaissance Records- “Beyond Detroit” (Sahar Z & Guy Mantzur after-hours remix)-ITS A FUCKING MENTAL JOURNEY INTO YOUR HEART AND MIND!
How’s 2013 been for you on the whole, you seem to have peaked with much of you’re work being show cased by many a top Dj. Happy with your musical achievements?-

SZ- Yes, I think 2013 was a great year for my music , I had some great collaborating with Guy J – Guy Mantzur – Chicola and Khen (with more to come in 2014) that’s got some really good feedback, but also it was the year that I found my independence in my studio productions and I finally came out with some solo projects.
In the current day and age of fast rising names and flash in the pans, what according to you are the main stays of a great Dj/Producer who can stand above the rest in terms of longevity?-

SZ- First and foremost it’s important to make your own music, your own productions whether they are originals or remixes, you need to be unique and fresh so it can stand above the rest of the music out there, and there is a lot out there!! Secondly knowing how to use it properly and in a clever way all the new medias out there like: Youtube – Facebook –Soundcloud –Instagram for your own promotions. One can create their own group of followers from all over the world, it’s crazy…Thirdly, use technology to re- create your sound and sets.
What can we expect from the ”The Cat & Dog” club brand in the near future. Any plans to expand and or promote the project in a bigger manner in the rest of the world?-

SZ- We may go global in future, but for now our goal is to keep up with our vision and to keep entertaining the crowd with our music and keep the fun experience one can get when one walks in to this amazing club.

The varying forms of technology remain the topic of conversation now. How much of it do you use in your Dj sets?-

SZ- As much as I can. In this day when music is accessible to everyone, one needs to find a way to be a bit different then the rest and technology can help you do that. One can re create others music the way you like and make it exclusive again, you can bring an entire studio into the Dj booth in a size of an Ipad. Future technology allows you to do things you can’t really do in the classic way of Dj-ing.
Lastly, I honestly have not come across even one track that you’ve made that I did not absolutely love, I’ve always found your music deliciously haunting and dance ready. Can we expect any album or compilation release in 2014? And thank you for talking to us at length about everything Sahar Z and the music you bring 🙂

SZ- My future plans are to start working on my first solo album. It’s something that I must do for myself. My goal is to keep making music that entertains me so it can keep entertaining the crowd.. Thank you and big love..

Hi Jeremy, been 6 months since we chatted at your last outing in India. How have things been since 2013 and what’s keeping you busy these summer months?

JO- Things have been great, thank you. Been making loads of new music and have been touring quite a bit. Just recently came back home after about a month in North America where I played a bunch of club shows, as well as some really cool festivals like Mysteryland and EDC in Las Vegas. Really nice experience.

The all important question, what inspired you to become a Dj?

JO- I actually started out producing first and being a DJ was something that came naturally later on. Ever since I finished my first track I started thinking in terms of how a club crowd would react to it. For me the two really go hand in hand.

You’re quite the computer geek and would rather tinker around with gadgets and music stuff. What’s exciting you at the moment, any musical gear that’s taking up your attention lately?

JO- Haha, yes I am. However, when it comes to my production of music I really take a minimalist approach. My philosophy is to keep my setup simple and try to really thoroughly learn the tools that I work with and make the most out of them. I did get the Maschine from Native Instruments a while ago though thinking it would be a cool addition, but it just ended up sitting on my desk collecting dust.

Your take on new age Progressive House is pretty much different to what’s playing from under the genre by other Dj/Producers. Is this still pretty much following on the foot steps of the giant Pryda label music sensibilities?

JO- Even though guys like Eric, Sasha and John Digweed have been major influences of mine I’ve always tried to leave it at that; them being an influence. I try to create a sound that I can proudly call my own, fit in my DJ sets and offer something that I feel is unique and hasn’t already been done.

You’re having quite a season traveling all over the world more than ever, can you give us your best club experience and any festival that you loved in terms of crowd, vibe and sound systems recently?

JO- Tough question because pretty much every show has been great. There are two that stand out though. For festivals, I have to say Mysterland USA. I played the Sunday School Stage back to back with Fehrplay and the stage production, the vibe and crowd was amazing. Even though it was in America it felt like a European festival. The location was Bethel Woods, which is where Woodstock was held back in the day. That added to it as well. As far as clubs, Beta in Denver was super cool. Played there for the first time and the sound system is one of the best I’ve ever heard.

What keeps your feet planted in Sweden, do you think the electronic dance music scene there as fertile?

JO- We’ve always had a really good underground scene. Even though it’s been small it’s been innovative and healthy. Nowadays when the scene has so much attention and people have broken through to the mainstream the amount of shows have gone up and they’ve become a lot bigger. I think some of the best DJs and producers in the world come from Sweden but I would love to see some more variety in terms of more Progressive and Tech guys maybe. Would be a cool compliment to the big room sound that’s so dominant right now. It’s definitely fertile though and there are new guys and girls that I hear making great stuff all the time.

As a producer do you consciously like to keep it melodic and bright?

JO- I love melodies and creating them is a really fun aspect of producing. They’re what strike an emotional chord with me when I listen to music and others too I think. More than anything I just think my sound and the music I make is the result of the people that have and still influence me like Eric, John and Sasha.

How’s your other project ”Dhillon”, coming along, last time we chatted you had mentioned there’s stuff you’re doing through it. Mainly we see a release ”Lost”, on the Drumcode label. Where was your head at, while making this track?

JO- Dhillon is doing great in his dark cave. I love Techno and making drum-oriented tracks just as much as I do making melodies and he allows expression of that kind of sound. Yes, that’s right. “Lost” just recently came out on Drumcode and their compilation A-Sides. Truly an honor for Dhillon to release stuff on there. It’s one of the most special and influential Techno labels out there. We have some cool stuff lined up for Dhillon going forward and I look forward to further developing it.

How’s your buddy Fehrplay doing, enjoying yourselves out there?

JO- He’s doing great! He doesn’t live in Sweden though. He’s from Norway originally but lives in London now. We played EDC in Las Vegas and Mysteryland together and he was all smiles as usual.

Happy to return with sLick for a quick tour this July, what are you going to do differently as opposed to your previous outings..can we look forward to your new releases being played out at the gigs?

JO- Very happy to be back in India with this mini-tour! With my mother being Indian, it feels extra special to play there, explore the scene and introduce more people to my sound. Had a really good time last time and this time around it’s going to be even better. I’ve managed to stay productive on the road and have some time to finish what I’ve been working on now that I’m home for a little bit, so you can definitely expect to hear new stuff from me!

How’s your music been received in the recent North American tour, is the crowd there receptive to the Olander motto of creating a journey and not just go bang bang from the word go?

JO- To be honest, I was nervous when I went there first time just because I didn’t know what reaction to expect from the crowds and what they expected from me. Kind of like when you start dating a new girl and don’t know each other all too well. Turned out my worries were unfounded and people really do understand my style and appreciated what I do.

There’s of course a lot of people that are just as educated in America as they are in Europe and it’s cool to play for them together with people that have recently discovered dance music and are just starting to dip their feet in the culture. It creates a really great energy because when something is new and fresh, you tend to me more excited about it.

How’s the Jeremy Olander plan looking like for the rest of 2014?

JO- In addition to visiting you guys I’ll be playing some shows in Africa, Ibiza, Creamfields in the UK and Electric Zoo in New York. Music-wise, I’m prepping a big comeback EP on Pryda Friends. With my most recent release on the label being “Bandersnatch”that came out in late 2013, it feels like it’s been forever and I’m very excited for what feels like a homecoming.

It’s going to have variety of tracks ranging from fan favorites that people have been wanting me to release for some time as well as new, completely fresh stuff. Have more projects in terms of releases lined up that I’m excited about but can’t really disclose more details at this point. Stay tuned! 🙂

ONOFF Recording is one of my favorite labels in the planet, and their release ”Dots Are Moving”- Sloo is just about super underground fare. The title track has able remixes by the likes of Fernando Guzman, Variond and Mac Dephoner. But what catches my ears is the Original mix. Really make some noise for this nasty bass gore 3 a.m goodness with echoing vocals, that means only one thing…you gotta surrender to this beauty. There’s a second track ”Adeond”, by Sloo, which has a remix thrown by Stefan Naimor…but by the time I get to it, I am totally haunted by the first tune and I keep going back to it. Tops!!

Title- Nadja Lind & Friends Digital Part 1

There’s a whole loada collaboration going on, in the pack with the likes of  Brendon Moeller, Omar Salgado, Vandermeer and Quintin Christian doing their bit. Tracks included- ”Street Beat”, ”Place of Bliss”.  But what gets me happy as hell, is when my ears tune in to ”Tramp Clown”- a bassy warrior with some cultured vocal pattern snaking around in a bouncy body. It’s got a dirty Tech step to it and simple ingredients with which one hits the break down. Thereafter it sorta gets going in to it’s own mind and makes you do some moves. My favorite though of the pack is ”Saharan Night”- starting off with a quiet menace, the cut throat quality of this one is astonishing. There’s a double bodied bass bubbling with a whistling pattern very very extra-ordinarily good…Pure acid!!

Not many people may know that Nocturna is a new project by Italian duo Andrea Cassino & Danny Lloyd. ”Big Bang”, is an absolute melodic Techno star. Classical chords right in place with a brooding, winding melody along side luminous pads breaking in the inside, is nothing short of relentless progression for your soul. The break down just soars out on top and just about touches memories of terracotta summer nights and breezy starry skies. The remixes have been tackled by some of the heavy weights in the current dance music scene which includes Sudbeat label boss Graziano Raffa’s work fabulously, but the original gets my thumbs up all the way…There’s a cozy, warm ”Microcosmos” tune to end the pack with, which is lovely too.

Flurry claps, fat bass flaring, heavy jolts of acidic swish make up for the title tune. There’s a ghostly vocal finding and eerie ripples at the back, then there’s ome steely beat prongs interjecting with nasty attitude on this one. It’s utterly captivating as ever. The Caldarelli remix is just a lot of grooving fun, the vocals get a bigger boost this time around, furnished with quite a bit of splintered sheen in the bass line. Down to the slightly subtle work of Yanes that feels like a respite, and carries a more staccato story to it’s nature. I like this pack!!

Title- Lady With No Face EP

Artist- Nyah Berkley. Remix- Javier Algarra

Loving this smooth as silk EP. The label as always does such fabulous releases, it’s just as well I nod in delight at their sounds and more. And I love both the undertakings of this release with equal feverishness. ”Bolero”, Original mix has lovely fragmented passages of broken bass sound and unresolved melody in a deep way yet quite Tech-House. The Javier Algarra’s Deep House stamp, is an immediate transportation to bigger things. There’s a roiling bass line in his handiwork and a perky attitude in it’s groove sense. One also finds an infectious vocal which is catching swinging in tandem to the bouncy bends. There’s a bee like offering all going back and forth just fine with the rest of the warm bodied tune. Nice one..

Title-Hypnoteric (LP Sampler Part 1)

Russian born Denis A. is new to me, but boy does he make a cutting edge sweep out of this release. He expands his forging work through his DAR label that rounds up his production force. ”Moenjodaro”, is a triumphant statement of the man’s musical sensibilities. The skewered break beatish feel is just lovely to hear, the tune is a portrait of adventurous Techno that strikes a near perfect balance between melody and propulsion of bass fierceness. This ones a ear catching, dance floor fruit. On to ”Space Truck”, a steady going melody vessel reminiscent of old. The melody pattern is fumingly hypnotic and fantastic. By the break, it’s far from delicate and gets me tied up in knots…wonderful bound. ”Flashback”- starts off with a synthetic eerie feel and has bass shuddering raciness on the whole. There’s a bubbling pad that comes and goes off it’s own free will, and the body gets heavier with post punk distortion. Make no mistake though, there’s enough melody to lift you up and keep you floating around for a bit. Must have!! 🙂

And saving the best for last, this track is gob-smackingly yummy, wondrous underground steam. Easily the mother of all Techno tunes in sometime now. This rework hasn’t been released, with no plans for it either. To deconstruct this one in words is difficult, yet I gotta say the minute the bass hits your ears, I challenge anyone except the disco mummies to stand still. The synth pattern along with the toughness in the core bass is just too blinding and fierce. The break down introduces a haunting beauteous melody winding up with shattering jars for aural love. Can’t get enough of this huge choon!!

Regardless of India’s sometimes archaic, some might even say burgeoning night life scene.. my search for a perfect party ended, when I got to experience the legendary Bedrock Records label boss John Digweed, a connoisseur of Progressive/ Tech-House at a local hot spot not so long ago. In a sea of events catering to raking in the big bucks, these nights brought out a handful number of fans old and new who love the underground. The two nights I speak of, remain unforgettable. The turn out was not as expected, but we who were there had an aural carnival. The lights down low, minimal fuss and a cavernous smoky vibe along-side the very nature of the hypnotic quality in the music was designed to dance uninhibitedly. The raving attitude of old, where one finds each other while floating around the room, if they want to on full display.

In contrast, with due respect to clubs or festival parties featuring for example the popular figures like Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, Steve Aoki to the Hardwell and Avicii are usually a spectacle of corporate sponsorship at hand with the bottle popping, cake throwing, confetti flying, picture taking decadence.

The divide is stark and felt immediately between the two segments, as catching up with the west we tend to book one of the Top Ten names, pay them huge amounts of money, which immediately indicates that they are ‘it’. As the cash got discovered in commercial House music world-wide, in turn India seemingly followed trends from international waters causing promoters/sponsors to focus on commercial EDM, as clearly the volume is in the youth. The entire phenomena is concentrated with our young as the core receiver and consumer who find popular music to be cool or trendy. Mainstream dance music mostly depends on vocals rendered by fashionably dressed recording artists collaborating with names such as David Guetta, Deadmau5, Kaskade to drive their packaging. Back in the days, the other experimental EDM came from Frankie Knuckles, Danny Tenaglia, Paul Oakenfold to Sven Vath in the later part of the 80’s/90s and early 2000. Early sign post parties held at Twilo, Tunnel, the Palladium and of warehouse clubbing in Europe are raving yarn. In no way, does the latter scene have lesser numbers abroad, till date.

Many of our local acts such as Anish Sood, Ajit Pai, Lost Stories, Clement DSouza, Priyanjana are sale able artists, who pack places with the younger lot that like the sing along vibe in India. Chatting with Priyanjana brings out the facts that cannot be ignored when she quips- ”Each to their own. Having said that, I am at a club residency where we feature commercial artists as well as the Underground acts. Yet, the only thing that gives it up, is when the public themselves end up enjoying only one and not the latter. It’s frustrating, but I would like to be positive and hope to see a change in that attitude in the near future”.

Our divide could be because, the club going audience here, does not have the numbers that sample a varied taste in music which is an essential to advocate, all kinds of genres. The early closing times at our clubs also play spoil-sport to building the Underground vibe. D-Nox (Germany) world renowned Techno Dj and label owner at Sprout Music say’s of our club scene-”It’s important for a good Techno party to go the distance of hours, only then can one feel any kind of hypnosis”. As was evident in his gigs in India, where short sets didn’t do any justice to the style of underground music he plays, which requires time to weave a story or create a vibe.

Founder at Krunk; Sohail Arora is positive though- ” I believe that in the last 2 to 3 years, we’ve seen a positive change to the rise of venues, festivals in our country supporting underground music. It’s been the busiest season so far and I feel the line getting blurry as many of our events are being head-lined by good artists. Even though we have a long way to go in terms of numbers, it’s still a great place to be in”.
EDM in India is the trendiest acronym for Pop music and then one has the respected Grammys acknowledge the impact of EDM stars such as Skrillex, David Guetta and Deadmau5 and our core youth is sold to the prominent styles of today. Several niche parties in metros such as Mumbai and Bangalore do suggest though, of the novelty in mainstream to be fading a bit and a balance created with the underground wheel.
Artists such as Sanjay Dutta, Ankytrixx, Madhav Shorey, Arjun Vagale, Praveen Achary, Jehan Johar, Anastasia & Whosane, Vipul Angirish who play forward thinking sounds reflects the broader range, are in fact performing with greater regularity.
A corporate hoodlum by day with the flip side of a crackling Techno Dj by night- Helium Project banters: ”The introduction of Commercial House music has expanded the size of people listening to EDM, but then roots where the genre originated from, is completely lost. Dance music, with it’s commercial packaging inside of EDM, is responsible for the down trend of quality music, whether by skewed programming in festivals, and club gigs. However, a handful of Djs/Promoters are hanging on to the more purist vibe. It all depends on how many of us are ready to bring in quality music which doesn’t necessarily get the cash registers ringing”.

Ash Roy, a member from the defunct yet most successful electronic bands of India, say’s- ‘‘The reason why Jalebee Cartel became a fantastic architect of the Indian underground scene was because we brought in the concept of Live Techno alongside the vibe of a proper rave, but as the band’s success grew and bookings started to pile up, our musical vision started to suffer, as it often happens the demand for a friendlier, more identifiable sounds came to our notice. Which was never our vision nor was it the direction that we wanted to go towards”.

On to another Dj/Producer making waves in our underground and more eclectic sphere; Madhav Shorey has this to say- ” I think the rift is something that’s always been there. Some things just belong in certain places and that’s just how it is. Underground music over the last few years has made a huge following for itself over the globe and is at a nice place where young artists who are experimenting and unique are making a name for themselves and even tricking into the mainstream. A lot of genres are blending into each other and honestly, neither one would not survive if it weren’t for the other. We would not have an option and I think it’s important to understand that”.

However, I remain confused at the future of dance music expansion in India, even though non formulaic music is getting a boost from companies like sLick!, Audiophile India and Unmute agency, a most heartening sign at best. There remains primarily, the attitude of a mass majority, who are still not ready to open up their minds to music with out Vocals. Also for the most part much of club etiquette is missing (more on that, later)..

Cutting edge performers such as Dubfire, D-Nox, Guy J, Richie Hawtin to name some have lured in good turn outs in 2013 and most encouraging for the circuit, that followers with mature taste in music and an older lot of fans are coming out in support more often fantastic news. Whatever void in this scene remains, is slowly but surely enterprising itself also with nightclubs such as Blue Frog, Lap, Bardo leading the way with show-casing many styles other than just the main stream. I want to be part of a day, when we can have a groovy scenario much like Richie Hawtin’s artistic fruition, where from being a typical child of the underground has gone on to make his project ”Enter”, a big business fashionable curation at Space, Ibiza. Much as I rejoice seeing the good times an Armin Van Buuren concert gets for our clubbing youth, I’d like to feel the experience of a Sven Vath driven ”Cocoon” rave instigated with equal equanimity.
The future looks bright but clouded simultaneously. Until we inculcate a broader thought pattern which rises above all to do good, invite more variety with regularity, we in every way stand a chance to languish in a race, no one is winning. Where the habit of a verbal rave is met with an actual one. I think it’s going to take more than that, to be a force to reckon with…

Before I run off to stomp another yard, as a foot note… after witnessing several top names in both the commercial and underground scenes, I’d very much like to point out to our promoters, that I’d rather pay top bucks to the local Dj/Producers of India who do such a fabulous and a far better job night after night, than hear crap coming out from the speakers played by (atleast some of them) these famous international artists of the electronic music scene. Can someone hire me as a disco police? 😀

Once in awhile there comes a performer who in the boredom of your dance mind, makes you get up and take notice of the warm beats they get dropping…. To veer away just a wee bit, to me 2012 is turning out to be a golden year for Progressive House and Techno standing out in the Electronic dance music tank.

Moving back to matters at hand..there is an artist of the finest caliber when he gets on the decks, a fabulous thoroughbred. He has been in the club scene many years as the hugely enviable Mashtronic, he is currently enjoying super stardom as one of the hottest Dj/Producers by chasing a successful solo career… which is why I am delighted to introduce to all of you the man cometh on his debut India Tour.

Give it up for CID INC from Finland.

Dancemunkey got the chance to have a chatter with him just before he gets started on his India tour. Get comfortable under your umbrellas and have a read will ya!

DM– Hello Henri Hurtig alias CID INC;  where did the choice of name come from. Does it  stand for something?

CID Inc– Heyya! Actually Cid Inc is a short form of Acid Incorporation 😉 I really liked and also played a whole lot of acid House/ Techno back in the mid 90s, hence the name and been stuck with it ever since.

DM– Give us some details on the start of your music career, your fans in India don’t know much?

CID Inc I started doing music around ’89 some time, it was with a computer (Commodore Amiga) and a very limited 4 channel program called Noisetracker that used 8 bit samples. Producing music was just a hobby until beginning of the new millenia when I really started focusing on the music. 2004 saw the first vinyl release with Mashtronic. I’ve been Djing since around ’93.

DM– Did you always know you would be a Dj and or producer?

CID Inc– Well I always knew I would have music as a hobby at least, as it’s been a passion since I was a kid. Once I started Djing and House/ Techno music came into my life I knew I wanted to work with that if possible.

DM– You started off in the 90’s, any artists in the scene you aspired to be like?

CID Inc I was really into KLF, Prodigy, Shamen, X-express 2 and also the whole rave thing in the beginning of the 90s. The list would probably be endless if I’d start naming all the influences.

DM– Your early years were spent in Finland and Sweden, did you take any formal training for the craft. Or was it that you just started tinkering at the decks?

CID Inc– We were a bunch of friends who started learning Djing, no one taught us so it’s all self learned.

DM– Mathias Bradler and you started Mashtronic, gaining a lot of prominence in the Electronic dance music scene…are you happy with your initial collaborations with Bedrock and Global Underground?

CID Inc- Yes, we were especially proud of the releases on Bedrock (of course!) Would be great to have a Cid Inc release on there as well at some point 😀

DM– Where does Mashtronic stand today vis a vis your solo career?

CID Inc– Well we made the last gig over in Macao, China back in 2010 and there’s no plans what so ever to continue working with Mashtronic. Concentrating doing solo stuff for 100%.

DM– Henri you’ve released your original productions and remixes with nearly every top label, how did your own happen- Replug Records. Is there a specific sound you advocate under this label?

CID Inc– Like many dudes in the scene, I wanted to have the chance to release what ever I wanted and when ever. When Jason from Proton told me about their “Proton Soundsystem” which is a management for labels, I thought that now is a good time to set up an own label. Proton has a very cool management system where basically everything’s automated, from royalty payments to
sending contracts for artists. This way I can concentrate more on the production and mastering
side of things but at the same time run a label. I usually get hooked on everything between Techno, Progressive, Tech and deeper sounds, so basically anything goes as long as it’s
something that rocks my socks.

DM– Any thoughts on the association with sLick, it’s a first class collaboration to come to India with?

CID Inc– Looking forward to it and I reckon it’ll be great! Prateek (from Slick) works very professionally so it’ll be  a pleasure for sure.

DM– Do you carry any impressions of India, considering this is your debut performance?

CID Inc– Well I heard the clubs close quite early, not sure if this is the case any more though. Anyway, really looking forward 🙂 to playing over there in India, always exciting to conquer a new land =)

DM– Which is your favorite club in the world you like to play at?

CID Inc– I’d say B018 in Beirut is one of them. I go and play there every summer, the Lebanese crowd is something extraordinary. Always fantastic times.

DM– Any particular thing that you don’t leave your house without, before a gig?

CID Inc Laptop & Controller!

DM– What is the concept behind the Replugged Volume 1 compilation. Are you planning on taking out similar releases?

CID Inc I wanted to put quality tracks in one release. Might be that Volume 2 will be done for next year.

DM– What would you call your current sound?

CID Inc– I suppose it’s a mix between Techno & Progressive.

DM- Do you dig your head in to the studio for days with production time, or do you like to work fast and get out gigging?

CID Inc– Totally depends on the mood, sometimes it takes few hours and some times a month or even more to finish off a track. My Mastering Service also takes a whole lot of time.

DM– What’s happening with your association with Global Underground tours, how’s that going for you?

CID Inc– GU has been very quiet the past year since the organization changed, so there’s not been happening much to be honest.

DM– Are you residing in Finland now. If so tell us how the music scene there is, any clubs that are extra ordinary for you?

CID Inc– The scene is quite ok here, not too much Progressive stuff around though. There’s two good clubs in Helsinki; Venue and Playground.

DM– Tell us how you like your console set up, anything you must have?

CID Inc– Not sure I understood the question, but if meaning the Dj booth then there’s a must for enough space for my Laptop and midi controller I play with.

DM– Did you ever spin on vinyls?

CID Inc Yes I did play with vinyls a loooong time ago =)

DM– Do you ever like take the older stuff produced out and think that maybe you can do more with it?

CID IncNaah, once a track is done then it’s done, period.

DM– Give us a tune, that you love to drop.

CID Inc– At the moment it’s the upcoming Guy J remix of Gill Norris – Forme. Biiiiig track!

DM– Can you tell us of your forthcoming releases and all that your fans can look forward to in 2012?

CID Inc I have an EP coming on Luis Junior’s Mooseekaa label, doing a remix for DNYO on Proton plus a few originals under the work that will be released on my Replug label and others.

DM– What does CID Inc on a day off, do to chill out?

CID Inc– I usually work seven days a week , but trying to have time off on Sundays (when not traveling) and spend it with my Missus and dog. Usually it involves red wine, good food and long walks in the nature.

DM– Ever recall a crazy fan giving you the evil eye 🙂

CID Inc– Can’t recall,  but I’m sure I’ve given an evil eye for a crazy fan 😀

DM- What’s your gig guide looking in the near future, where do you go from here?

CID Inc– After India it’s time for South America again.

The golden boy of electronic dance in India hardly needs an introduction. Having paved the way to a path that is full of intelligent musical sensibilities for many years, not for one minute has the trade mark twinkle diminished. It totally explains why he is such an incredible success story not only as part of the hugely celebrated Electronic act Jalebee Cartel; Ash holds his own even when he is appearing solo.

Dancemunkey caught up with him while on his Europe tour doing what he is known to do best…sing a song, ride the percussions and play out dj sets worth Red Rackham’s treasure…hehe just joking 🙂 (an imaginary character, while Ash is as real as it gets)…

Meet the soul behind the ultra cool music man-

DM- Ash Roy, you are a supernova of the Electronic dance music scene in India. Tell us when and how did the Djing bug bite you?

AR- Well I was always fascinated with Turntables and the idea of playing records while I was a kid. I started off playing for parties  in 1995  but on cassette players since that’s what I could get my hands on. Then later on in 1996 I got the opportunity to play at Anticlock; one of the first few nightclubs in Kolkata. The day I was hired as a resident dj at Anticlock there was no looking back. I fell in love with what I was doing. The whole process of mixing music just got to me.

DM- You have an illustrious and envious catalog of residencies and gigs from as early as the 90’s, happy with your beginnings?

AR- Yes, very happy with all my residencies and gigs. It’s because of all those experiences I had as a Dj which has got me to where I am today.

DM- Any artists back in the early days, who may have influenced you with their music sensibilities?

AR- Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode & Underworld.

DM- Growing up in Kolkata your home town, a musically rich back ground?

AR- Kolkata has such a strong musical background from Indian classical to Blues, Jazz,  Rock & Roll. It’s because of me growing up in such a rich back ground of music I got into Djing and to producing and performing. I got formal training in Tabla from the age of 7. If it wasn’t for Tabla I wouldn’t be playing all those percussion’s in our LIVE sets. So yes growing up in Kolkata has been inspiring and has been an integral part of my life.

DM- Was veering off from Progressive House a conscious decision, as your early days smacked off those sounds to what you are doing now?

AR- Quality House music was something I fell in love with the day I heard it. Yes it was a conscious effort cause there a lot of other sounds like Tech House & Techno that were being played all over the world ….specially in Europe. All Record labels were signing more Tech House and Techno tracks. So I decided to produce Tech House & Techno. This way I got the opportunity to play these genres to the Indian audience. You have to keep evolving. If you keep playing the same stuff and producing the same stuff then you get boring. You need to move on…and so I did.

DM- How did the explosive collaboration with fellow musicians from Jalebee Cartel happen?

AR- It happened when I shifted to Delhi in 2003 and teamed up with Arjun Vagale and Ashvin Mani Sharma.  Later Madhav Shorey and G. Arjun joined the team and we just hit it off not only as fellow Dj’s/Musicians but as friends. We enjoyed each others company and every moment of producing and playing together.

DM- Your role in the band with vocals & percussion’s, as a collective…can you think of any one element that has made Jalebee Cartel the most successful of all time?

AR- I think everyone’s effort in whatever possible way has got Jalebee to where it is. It’s the people that make a nation and it was us together that made Jalebee Cartel successful.

DM- How did the singing and playing of instruments take shape, did you get formal training for it?

AR- I got formal training in tabla when I was a kid and I used to sing for the school choir. When we formed Jalebee we wanted to take dance music to another level. I wanted to make it more interactive. So I sang and introduced a lot of different percussion’s in our LIVE sets.

DM- Does your productions have any one quality you like to represent?

AR- It represents me. Most of my productions have a lot of percussion sounds in it and I like to keep it groovy.

DM- Describe yourself in 5 words.

AR- Emotional, Funny, Dreamer, Ambitious, Story teller.

DM- You travel pretty much all around the globe, how do you find time to get stuck in the studio?

AR- Well I normally play on the weekends. I find time in the studio on weekdays.

DM- What is your favorite Dj setup?

AR- I always loved playing records so it was 2 turntables and a mixer, but since it’s easier to carry a laptop, Soundcard & a Midi controller so I made the shift.

DM- Do you think the dance scene in India is plodding a bit, as compared to the massive party attitude prevalent in the rest of the world?

AR- There has been a huge change in India. More and more people are listening to Dance music nowadays but looking at our nightlife situation in the country just makes me sad. New rules coming in and Night Clubs shutting early plus some clubs shutting down completely. If it continues this way then it will be difficult for the scene to grow. Besides this I think we in India have a great audience and have the same energy compared to any other country abroad.

DM- Any gig that you will never forget?

AR- Fusion Festival, Germany 2010. We played on the main Techno stage called Trumbuhne. We had nearly 10 – 15 thousand people dancing to the music. It was phenomenal.

DM- A crazy fan request?

AR- This happens a lot in India ” Can you please play some songs “

DM- Vinyls, would you play on them now?

AR- I would love to play Vinyls, but playing through my laptop with a sound card and midi controller is more convenient. We don’t get vinyls in India plus most labels have gone digital.

DM- Give the latest news on any upcoming releases this year?

AR- Well as of now I have a 2 track Ep called ” Hour Glass ” which is soon to be out on Kasey Taylor’s ” Vapour Recordings ” and another 4 track Ep called ” Smell.S.D soon to be out on Elektrotribe Records Berlin, plus a few remixes.

DM- Your project with another member of the band member Ashwin, ‘Crash & Boom’, how’s that going and where are you headed with that?

AR- Crash & Boom is a project Ashvin and I started just for the love of Psychedelic Trance. We have quite a few original tracks. We have been producing and performing just for fun.

DM- Any collaborations with labels, we need to know of that’s big news?

AR- Releasing on Vapour Records is a good sign.

DM- What’s your summer looking like, we know your headed to Europe. Anything that you are especially looking forward to in the upcoming tour?

AR- Yes a lot of gigs lined up and looking forward to playing in Fusion Festival again.

DM- If you were stuck in the woods with Ritchie Hawtin, Josh Wink and a console?

AR- Hahahah….well I’d play them a set and then tell them to come and play with me back to back 🙂

DM- Your personal favorite club or festival?

AR- Fusion Festival, Germany.

DM- How do you handle the fame & adulation that’s come your way?

AR- I try and be humble.

DM- As one part of a successful band; do you prefer to play out at live performances or Dj sets, a leaning towards one or the other?

AR- I enjoy playing alone as well with the band. 

DM- How different is it to you performing solo to when you are performing as a collective of Jalebee Cartel?

AR- When we play LIVE as a collective then i do vocals, Percussion’s and then Dj, but when i play alone I Dj and throw in a few percussion’s.

DM- Lastly, any tune that you have produced you may be especially proud of?

AR- Well the 2 new Ep’s to be out soon are the ones I’m looking forward to.

The dynamism of Ash Roy is on glorious display here in India and internationally. If someone were to ask me what makes Ash Roy special, I would reply- origin unknown…

Hello munkeys…

I’ve packed up my furry boots and hoodie from Goa and leapt off to an electrifying number of days in the sun. The dancing has begun in earnest with the recently concluded Universal Religion up in the mountains of Nepal, which I am saddened to say I had to cancel on. The reports out- a fabulous festival full of color, top class music and a kick the guts line-up of djs. More power to them for future editions!!

As I bounce along to the beats news you mad hooligans is, that one of the main stays of electronic dance music for years now, has announced his retirement from djing. Danny Tenaglia… is hanging up his head phones; the world of music entertainment will miss him no doubt.

And the music goes on so without further ado, Sunburn 2012 Mumbai was of epic proportions.

The first ever edition in Mumbai brought to us by Percept gave the mother of all party boosts and immediately created major topsy-turvy fun to everyone’s life in the very heart of our favorite concrete jungle. The city had an electric buzz and an unmistakable excitement that pervaded in the air for all to feel.

The elephantine Tulip Star at Juhu stood like a long forgotten relic to host the festival in its massive fold. The 3 days were super duper fun with the line-up sagging with the weight of some of the most popular djs of the world featured at the party.

Gareth Emery, Mat Zo, Fergie, Skazi, GMS, Sultan & Ned Shepard, John Dahlback & some. The aforementioned names had a zillion peeps eating out of their hands…it was plain to see the mass brigade in full force taking to popular music as expected. The turn out of clubbers attending all 3 festival days were fabulous and an energy filled lot. To me all the main acts sounded the same to be very honest; the mixes were different. One  played a Psychedelic mix…the other a Housey one, who cares anymore.

What I cared about was the production quality of the event.

Top notch right from the lights, visuals, to the sleek looking stage areas. Sound was a bit dodgy…could be the venue space is such a way that could’ve been the reason so, it played spoil sport at some points with certain artists with certain sounds.

Fabulous visuals giant ‘Immersive’ did the honors of giving my eye balls some work-out. The nitro blasts were so much damn fun …the lights were blindingly happy go lucky. The confetti, balloons, disco police and special effects blinder- ‘Revibe’ all rolled in to one was one spectacular Sunburn.

On to the artists who made me thank god I am alive and dancing-

Arjun Vagale- Slurrpyy…I felt like I was in an aerobics class. Techno dripping Santa, if ever there was one.

Boombaba went EVP gone mad, Ankytrixx- played under his new project name ‘Firefly’, under which he will showcase Psychedelic & Progressive Trance was high octane energy & Janux all full of deep Psychedelic intensity performed indoors on Day 3- Thanks be to god for the invention of air con and the fact that all of them gave me much Psychedelic wonders to dance and run around to. Electrypnose was the one artist whose set was canned entirely due to issues at the venue, as usual cops came and stopped the party way before it’s scheduled time on the first festival evening calling it a rave. Hahaha…in British slang it really means boisterous dancing, didn’t know I had no right to.

The icing on the cake though which I did dance very boisterously to was Sanjay Dutta’s Techno candies the size of asteroids through his Afterburn set at Royalty, Bandra…post the festivities at Tulip Star. Then came Aly & Fila and he barely played  some tracks, and was promptly told to end the evening at a gob-smackingly early time of 1 a.m. I cannot believe I work hard; I pay my taxes and someone else gets to decide when my party should end or what time I should go home. Regressive as ever a society I’ve ever seen.

As we stand Mumbai is going through a lock down of sorts, parties getting busted by cops in the name of a rave. Music lovers, artists/ producers and clubbers stand shocked at the immensity with which this art and entertainment is being targeted, the  less I want to talk about it.

This once great city is saturated with corruption and we are all in the middle of the bust. I for one am not hanging my dancing shoes up and my musical heart gets brighter ever more so. I am gonna blast those speakers and rave like a beast, let’s see who is going to stop me….
